The literature teacher says that the faster you are able to read, the less time you will need to read a book. Maria can read 200 words a minute, and she took 14 hours to read a book that she checked out from the library. Linda can read 160 words per minute. How long will she need her to read the same book?

Answer:

Linda needs 17.5 hours her to read the same book.

Explanation:

The number of words read in 1 minute by Maria = 200 words

The time taken to complete the book = 14 hours

Now, 1 hour = 60 minutes

So, 14 hour = 60 x 14 = 840 minutes

Now, the total words read by Maria in 840 minutes

= 840 x ( Number of words read per minute) = 840 x (200) = 1,68,000

Hence, in total 14 hours, Maria read 1,68,000.

So, the book has 1,68,000 words in total.

Now, The number of words read in 1 minute by Linda = 160 words

So, the number of words read by her in 1 hour 9( = 60 minutes)

= 60 x (160 words) = 9,600 words

Linda reads 9,600 words in 1 hour.

So, the number of hours taken to read 1,68,000 words by Linda

=
\frac{\textrm{Total Number of words to read}}{\textrm{Words read in 1 hour}}

= (1,68,000)/(9,600) =17.5

Hence,Linda needs 17.5 hours her to read the same book.
