Explanation:

3(x + 4.5) = 36.....distribute the 3 thru the parenthesis

3(x) + 3(4.5) = 36

3x + 13.5 = 36....subtract 13.5 from both sides

3x + 13.5 - 13.5 = 36 - 13.5.....simplify

3x = 22.5....divide both sides by 3

(3/3)x = 22.5 / 3

x = 7.5 <========

lets check it..

3(x + 4.5) = 36

3(7.5 + 4.5) = 36

3(12) = 36

36 = 36 (correct)...so it checks out
