The Country Times offers a 20% discount on a Saturday ad that also runs on Sunday. The local department store contracts for a ¼ page ad to run every Saturday and Sunday for the remainder of the year (16 weeks). How much will the department store pay for the ads?

Answer:

40% of the price of ads during the week or 60% less by advertising on Saturdays

Explanation:

The department store pays on a normal week day for two days a week will be

1/4 * (2 days) * (16 weeks )* x= 8 x

However on Saturdays ads the department store pays

1/4 * (1 days) * (16 weeks ) * 0.8 * x = 3.2 * x to the Country Times on Saturdays

Which is 40% of the price of ads during the week or 60% less by advertising on Saturdays
