You and a friend are shopping together, you want to get a jar of salsa. There is a 12-ounce jar for $2.25 and an 18-ounce jar for $3.24. Which jar is the better value? How do you know?

Answer:

The 18-ounce jar is a better value because it has a lower unit price.

Explanation:

Given:

Cost of a 12-ounce jar of salsa = $2.25

Cost of a 18-ounce jar of salsa = $3.24

To find the better value.

Solution:

In order to compare the rates of the jars of salsa and find the better deal, we will find their unit rates.

Using unitary method to find the unit rates.

1) 12-ounce jar of salsa:

If 12 ounce cost = $2.25

Then 1 ounce will cost =
(2.25)/(12) = $0.1875 ≈ $0.19

2) 18 ounce jar of salsa:

If 18 ounce cost = $3.24

Then 1 ounce will cost =
(3.24)/(18) = $0.18

On comparing the unit prices, we find out that the 18-ounce jar is a better value as it has a lower unit price.
