Louis XIV was the king of France between 1643-1715. He believed such rituals and extravagant palace were important social practices to reaffirm the hierarchy of French society.

In repeating such rituals and exhibiting wealthiness the king was showing and reaffirming his position of power on top of the society.

During this period France still had many medieval customs such as to reaffirm positions in society as static and immutable. The idea of change and radical change in society would only come with the eruption of the French Revolution a few decades later.
