Answer:

Research Question:

How do different types of light affect plant growth?

Hypothesis:

If plant seedlings are exposed to blue light, then they will show the most rapid growth(height).

Dependent Variable/Response Variable:

Aspect of plant growth (plant height)

Independent Variable:

Color of light

Explanation and Experimental Design:

Dependent Variable/Response Variable:

A dependent or response variable is the measurable quantity or variable that changes in response to changes in the independent variables.

Independent Variable:

An independent variable is the factor in the experiment that changes and in turn, affects the response variable.

Materials:

  1. Soybean seedlings
  2. Soil
  3. Fertilizers
  4. Watering can
  5. Small pots
  6. Light filters (Red, blue, green and yellow)

To investigate the effect of different colored light on plant seedlings, the following steps will be followed:

  1. Germinate 5 soybean seeds in petri dishes in a lab.
  2. Label the new seedlings: Seedling 1, Seedling 2, Seedling 3, Seedling 4 and Seedling 5.
  3. As the seeds germinate into seedlings, transfer the 5 seedlings to 5 different pots with soil and added fertilizers.
  4. Cover each pot with filters in the following manner:
  • Leave the plant labelled Seedling 1 without filter i.e. in direct sunlight.
  • Cover the Seedling 2 with red filter.
  • Cover Seedling 3 with blue fliter.
  • Cover Seedling 4 with green filter.
  • Cover Seedling 5 with yellow filter.

5. Place all the pots in sunlight and water them daily. Measure the height of the plants daily to notice which one has grown the most.

6. Record the results and analyze the data obtained.
