The answer is -5.

First (to be technical) you need to distribute the + (or just 1) to the -4 in parentheses. -4*1=-4. Therefore that would leave you with -1-4 which can also be changed into -1+-4. You would be adding a negative to another negative with will just add to the negative. -1+-4= -5
