Poem by Brooks.

‘Speech to the Young: Speech to the Progress-Toward’ is a beautiful poem written by Gwendolyn Brooks which addresses the young people to pay no attention to the negative comments and to live their life, which is also the main theme of the poem.

The poem consists of two stanza. The first stanza is about the other people (them), whereas the second stanza is about us (you). In the second stanza the poet have used Alliteration and Anaphora by repeating the word ‘Live’ at the beginning if every line.

The repetition of the words puts an emphasis on the theme to ‘Live in the along’, which means to live in the present.
