The southern states encouraged the institution of slavery while the northern states desired to abolish it. It was called the antebellum period. slaves from Africa were deported to America as slaves and the economy was flourishing due to the persistence of slave labor.

Step-by-step explanation:

Slavery was legitimized. Black codes and Jim Crow laws prevailed which said that segregation is legal. Gradually the movement of Abolitionism marked the beginning of slave redemption and African Americans started to echo their voice out in order to claim their rights to be the citizen of United states. Propaganda against the slavery were made. Kennicott, the famous historian argues that the largest and most effective abolitionist speakers were the blacks who spoke before the countless local meetings of the National Negro Conventions. Dred Scott case hearing by the supreme court is considered to be the rudest verdict which stated that African Americans were not considered to the citizens and hence Dred Scott lost his case. Emancipation proclamation was considered to be revolutionary as it declared more than three millions slaves to be set free and many Africa Americans went in search of good jobs in North. After reconstruction, Blacks slowly started to form their communities, build churches and schools. Hiram Revels became the first African-American Senator in the U.S. Congress in 1870. Other African Americans soon came to Congress from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Jim Crow laws were totally abolished by the supreme court which clearly interpreted the constitution stating that 'Separate but equal' doctrine which is mentioned in the constitution has a certain element of subtle inequality hidden in it and hence the black codes were abolished. this was considered to be the revolutionary decision which improved the dignity of African Americans.
