x = first car, y = second car

40x + 25y = 1475

x + y = 50...x = 50 - y

40(50 - y) + 25y = 1475

2000 - 40y + 25y = 1475

-40y + 25y = 1475 - 2000

-15y = - 525

y = -525 / -15

y = 35 gallons <=== second car

x + y = 50

x + 35 = 50

x = 50 - 35

x = 15 gallons <== first car
