I think you could say:
1. Scare tactics didn’t accomplish his goal, and actually scared people away from the church, rather than sin
2. Scare tactics can sometimes work in today’s society, as seen by anti-smoking commercials, but a lot of time consumers can feel betrayed if they find that what a company is saying isn’t 100% truthful, and the scare tactic can actually have an opposite effect and lead consumers to do what the company was advising them against
3. Other ways to persuade people are: giving out free “merch” of whatever the slogan you’re persuading people towards, have celebrities endorse your cause, instead of sharing the negative effects of doing something, show the positive effects of NOT doing it.
