Answer:

1) a=

- (1)/(2)

2) b=

(1)/(2)

Explanation:

To find y :

-x+y= 1

Take this equation as (1)

3x-y= 5

Take this equation as (2)

-3x + 3y = 3

Take (1) and multiply x to make it the same as 3x from (2)

3x - y = 5

Keep (2) the same

3x- 3y = 3

Make 3x in (1) positive

3x - 3y = 3

- 3x - y = 5

Minus (2) from (1) to factor out x

- 4y = - 2

After minus

4y = 2

Cancel out the minus

y =

(1)/(2)

Bring 4 to the other side and divide 2 by 4

To find x :

- x + ( 1/2) = 1

substitute y with its value

- x = 1/2

bring 1/2 to the other side and minus from 1

x = - 1/2

bring the negative sign to the other side
