What is the function of June in "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"

How, specifically, would the story be different without her presence?

Answer:

"Where are you Going, Where Have You Been?" is a story by American writer Joyce Carol Oates about sexuality, published in 1966 and inspired by the murders committed by Charles Schmid Jr. in Arizona from the perspective of its main character, "Connie", a rebellious teenager discovering her sexuality and obsessed with her appearance.

June (Connie’s older sister) is a character in the story who is kind of the opposite of Connie; June is used by the author as a foil, a foil is a literary device used to make a contrast against another character, and in this case, June's character helps the audience to understand more Connie's personality and her motivations, especially Connie's rebellious side against her mom.
