One day you went to the Three dollar store. Of course all items you chose were $3. This store is a city with no sales tax on food, but an 5% tax on non food items. You paid the bill of $34.05. How many of each type of item did you buy?

Answer:

I buy 4 food items and 7 non-food items from the store.

Explanation:

The food items in the store are sold at $3 each and the non-food items are sold at $3 plus 5% tax.

So, the cost of each non-food items will be
3(1 + (5)/(100)) = 3.15 dollars.

If we consider that I buy 1 food item, then I buy $(34.05 - 3) = $31.05 of non-food items which is not a multiple of $3.15.

If I buy 2 food items, then I buy $(31.05 - 3) = $28.05 of non-food items which is again not a multiple of $3.15.

If we consider that I buy 3 food items, then I buy $(28.05 - 3) = $25.05 of non-food items which is again not a multiple of $3.15.

If I buy 4 food items, then I but $(25.05 - 3) = $22.05 of non-food items which is finally a multiple of $3.15 as (3.15 × 7) = 22.05.

Therefore, I buy 4 food items and 7 non-food items from the store. (Answer)
