The number of cars is 3 and number of buses is 4
Solution:
Given that, a class of 195 students went on a field trip
Total number of students = 195
Let the number of cars be x
Let the number of buses be y
They took 7 vehicles, some cars and some buses
Therefore,
number of cars + number of buses = 7
x + y = 7 ------- eqn 1
Each car holds 5 students and each bus holds 45 students
Therefore, we can frame a equation as:
5 x number of cars + 45 x number of buses = total number of students
![5 * x + 45 * y=195](https://img.qammunity.org/2021/formulas/mathematics/middle-school/c10j8dzoftw1iu3pz6fsomo9qx8z67wsag.png)
5x + 45y = 195 --------- eqn 2
Let us solve eqn 1 and eqn 2
From eqn 1,
x = 7 - y ------- eqn 3
Substitute eqn 3 in eqn 2
5(7 - y) + 45y = 195
35 - 5y + 45y = 195
40y = 195 - 35
40y = 160
y = 4
Substitute y = 4 in eqn 3
x = 7 - 4
x = 3
Thus number of cars is 3 and number of buses is 4
