- 5x + y = 7 → (1)

- 3x - 2y = 12 → (2)

Multiplying (1) by 2 and adding to (2) will eliminate the y- term

- 10x + 2y = 14 → (3)

Add (2) and (3) term by term

(- 3x - 10x) + (- 2y + 2y) = (12 + 14), that is

- 13x = 26 ( divide both sides by - 13 )

x = - 2

Substitute x = - 2 into either of the 2 equations

Substituting in (1)

- 5(- 2) + y = 7

10 + y = 7 ( subtract 10 from both sides )

y = - 3

Solution is ( - 2, - 3 )
