At an ice cream parlour, ice cream cones cost 1.10 and sundaes cost 2.35. One day the receipts for a total of 172 cones and sundaes were 294.20. How many cones were sold?

Answer:

Number of Cones Sold=88

Number of Sundaes Sold=84

Explanation:

Suppose

Number of Cones Sold: c

Number of Sundaes Sold: s

For the condition of 172 sum of cones and sundaes


c+s=172...........................................(i)

and for the total bill for the ice creams' condition


1.1*c+2.35*s=294.2.......................(ii)

By solving equation (i) and (ii) simultaneously, we get

c=88 and s=84

Hence, 88 cones would be sold and 84 sundaes.
