Explanation: In 1876,the presedential election was held on the 7 th of november . It was the 23 quadrennial election and was supposedly the most controversial election in the history of the United States of America .Samuel J Tilden was the democrat nominee and Rutherford B hayes was the republican nominee.The post election process was also controversial ,however , hayes was declaired the winner .but before the elections , tilden had won the most popular votes . This is only the second election ,where the person who won the most popular votes had lost the actual election.
