Does this class of molecules mix well with water?

a. What is our scientific word for things that dissolve in water? (it literally means
"water loving" in Greek.)
b. What is our scientific word for things that don’t dissolve in water? (it literally
means "water-fearing" in Greek.)
c. Based on what we know about the chemistry of biological membranes, which
of these two will be able to dissolve freely though the interior of a biological
membrane?

Answer:

a. The things that dissolve in water is known as hydrpohilic molecule. These molecules are polar in nature and can easily form hydrogen bonding with the water molecule.

b. The things that are insoluble in water is known as hydrophobic molecule. These molecules are non polar in nature and forms a droplet or may form a separate layer when dissolve in water.

c. The biological membrane is made of the lipid bilayer and the proteins are embedded or may span in the bilayer. The hydrophobic molecule can easily dissolve through the interior of the biological membrane.
