Read this excerpt from "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi."

Teddy shouted to the house: "Oh, look here! Our mongoose is killing a snake”; and Rikki-tikki heard a scream from Teddy's mother. His father ran out with a stick, but by the time he came up, Karait had lunged out once too far, and Rikki-tikki had sprung, jumped on the snake's back, dropped his head far between his fore-legs, bitten as high up the back as he could get hold, and rolled away. That bite paralysed Karait, and Rikki-tikki was just going to eat him up from the tail, after the custom of his family at dinner, when he remembered that a full meal makes a slow mongoose, and if he wanted all his strength and quickness ready, he must keep himself thin.
Who is the protagonist in this excerpt?
Karait, because he causes the danger
Teddy, because he is the one in trouble
Rikki-tikki, because he solves the problem
Teddy’s father, because he tries to protect Teddy

D) Teddy's father, because he tries to protect Teddy

Process of Elimination:

A cannot be correct, causing danger does not make someone a protagonist, and if anything makes them an antagonist.

B cannot be correct, because, sure, he is the one in trouble, but he's not the main character. For example, in Mario games, peach is the one in danger, but peach isn't the main character. Mario is, because we follow Mario and he is the one that tries to save peach.

C Cannot be correct either. Rikki-tikki did solve the problem, which is obviously very helpful to the protagonist, but still, they are not the protagonist themselves. Imagine a story where someone has a problem, but a different character gives the solution. The person that had the problem is still the main character, the other character just helped the main character.

Hope this helped!
