a gasoline tank is initially 1/7 full. after some travel the tank is only 1/9 full. the tank is then filled to capacity by adding 24 gallons of gasoline. what is the capacity of the tank in gallons?

27 gallons is the capacity of the tank.

Explanation:

Let the capacity of the tank be x gallons.

Initial tank was filled =
(1)/(7)x

After travelling tank was found to have =
(1)/(9)x

24 gallons of gasoline was added to fill the tank completely.


x=+(1)/(9)x+24


x-(1)/(9)x=24


(9x-1x)/(9)=24


(8x)/(9)=24


x=(24* 9)/(8)=27

27 gallons is the capacity of the tank.
