Imperial Russian nationalism, the first form of Russian nationalism, was grounded in 'nationality' as a sense of belonging to a state identity. It was based on two other principles:

  1. 'orthodoxy,' which is the protection of Orthodox Christianity and especially the Russian Orthodox Church;
  2. 'autocracy,' which implied loyalty to the House of Romanov (ruling over the empire in the 19th century, when this ideology was founded) in return for protection.
