Imagine that you are an adviser to either China’s emperor or Japan’s shogun. Write a letter advising the ruler whether you support a policy of isolation or engagement. Explain your reasons for supporting that policy. Your letter should be three paragraphs and each paragraph should discuss one reason for supporting or opposing isolation

(However you want to greet said emperor) I believe that we should support the policy of engagement. While in our history we have remained isolated by supporting engagement we are opening ourselves to more of the world.

One reason we should use engagement is that our natural resources are limited here and we can obtain much more through contact. By having contact with other countries we can gain ally’s and materials that we cannot have on our own. By being more engaged we are opening ourselves to other countries.

If we choose engagement we can use that to develop our military. (At the time Japan had no Navy) While isolation has helped us in the past we stand to benefit more from the ideas of engagement
