A local restaurant recently renovated its dining space, purchasing new tables and chairs to use in addition to the original tables and chairs. The new tables seat 6 customers, while the original tables seat 4 customers. Altogether, the retaurant now has 40 tables and is capable of seating 220 customers. How many more new tables than original tables does the restaurant have?

The original table seats 4 customers

Total number of tables = 40

Total number of customers capable of seating = 220

Let new tables = x

Let original tables = y

x + y = 40 ...........(1)

6x + 4y = 220 ...........(2)

From equation (1)

x + y = 40

x = 40 - y............. (3)

Put eq(3) into eq(2)

6(40 - y) + 4y = 220

240 - 6y + 4y = 220

240 - 2y = 220

-2y = 220 - 240

-2y = -20

y = -20/ -2

y = 10

Put y=10 into eq(3)

x = 40- 10

x = 30

To find how many more new tables than the original table the restaurant has, we will subtract the number of original tables from new ones.

y - x

= 30 -10

= 20
