PROBLEM 9. A freshman mechanical engineering student made the following grades of A, B, A, B, A for each course (each course consisted of 3 credit hours) during their first semester of college, yielding a GPA of 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. The following semester, the student has four 3-hour courses completed with earned grades of C, B, A, A, and one course that has not been completed yet. The student has a scholarship that requires a yearly minimum GPA of 3.5 be maintained in order to continue receiving funds.

What grade must the student earn in the remaining 3 hour course to maintain the scholarship?

Answer:

The student must earn A Grade in remaining course to maintain scholarship.

Explanation:

The formula for calculation of GPA is:

GPA = ∑[(Grade Point)(Credit Hour)]/Total Credit Hours

Thus, for the GPA of 3.6 in first semester, for given grades and course, the grade points assigned to the grades should be:

A = 4.00

B = 3.00

C = 2.00

Let x be the grade points in the course to be completed.

Now, for yearly GPA to be minimum 3.5:

GPA = 3.5 = [(4)(3)+(3)(3)+(4)(3)+(3)(3)+(4)(3)+(2)(3)+(3)(3)+(4)(3)+(4)(3)+(x)(3)]/(3)(10)

(3.5)(30) = (93 + 3x)

105 - 93 = 3x

x = 12/3

x = 4.00

Since the grade point in the last course should be 4.00.

Therefore, the student must earn A Grade, in the remaining course to maintain the scholarship.
