A group of scouts helped rangers clear a trail after an ice storm. They cleared tree branches from 2 5/6 miles of trail the first day. On the second day, they cleared 3 1/4 miles of trail. If the length of the trail is 8 3/4 miles, how many miles of trail do they have left to clear?

Answer:

The remaining number of miles to trail will be
3(3)/(4) miles.

Explanation:

A group of scouts cleared tree branches from
2(5)/(6) i.e.
(17)/(6) miles of trail the first day. On the second day, they cleared
3(1)/(4) i.e.
(13)/(4) miles of trail.

Therefore, in two days they have cleared
((17)/(6) + (13)/(4)) = (17 * 2 + 13 * 3)/(12)  = 5 miles.

If the length of the trail is
8(3)/(4) i.e.
(35)/(4) miles, then the remaining number of miles to trail will be
(35)/(4) - 5 = (15)/(4) = 3(3)/(4) miles. (Answer)
