Mazzini joined the revolutionary Carbonari Society & supported the widespread European efforts at liberal & constitutional revolution in 1830. He established a Young Italy Society which established branches in many Italian cities. Through these branches, he believed, that with organized uprisings, the people could run the Italian Princes away & get rid of the Austrians control of the Italian Peninsula. Even though membership was declared treason, other Young Associations were formed, such as Young Europe and Young Switzerland believing in liberty, and equality for all mankind. In 1846, he encouraged a newly elected Pope with liberal views to help with a national and religious mission but that did not happen. 1848-1849, Charles Albert of Sardinia-Piedmont made an alliance with nationalism against Austria and Mazzini returned to the Italian Peninsula and joined the nationalistic forces of Garibaldi. In 1849, he was elected as a member of a New Roman Republic, after the pope went into exile, and helped come up with a constitution for the Roman Republic. It fell after a battle with a French army that was helping the pope re-establish Rome for the Pope.
