Answer:

The needed equation is:
4.25  =( (p+4)/(2) )

The amount of Theo's donation = $ (4.5)

Explanation:

Let us assume the amount of Theo's donation = $ p

Now, his grandfather added $4 to the donation.

So, the New amount = Theo's amount + Grandfather's share

= $p + $ 4 = $ (4 +p)

Again, the half of the total amount =
((4 +p)/(2))

So, the amount donated to the charity =
((4 +p)/(2))

But according to the question, amount donated = $4.25

\implies 4.25  =( (p+4)/(2) )\\\implies 4.25 * 2  = p+ 4\\\implies  p +  4  = 8.5\\\implies  p =  8.5 - 4  = 4.5\\\implies p = 4.5

Hence, the amount of Theo's donation = $ p = $ (4.5)
