Answer:

Cost of first stamp = 0.62 dollars

Cost of second stamp = 0.62 dollars

Cost of third stamp = 3.72 dollars

Explanation:

Number of stamps John bought = 3

Cost of two stamps were same, so let it be x

Cost of third stamp is 3 times as much as there other two together

So the cost of third stamp will be 3(x+x)

Amount paid for all the three stamp was five dollar and john received a balance of 4 cents. so the cost was 4.96 dollars.

Cost of stamp 1+ cost of stamp 2 + cost of stamp 3 = 4.96

x+ x+ 3(x+x) = 4.96

2x+3(2x)=4.96

2x+6x=4.96

8x = 4.96

x= (4.96)/(8)

x= 0.62

Thus the cost of first stamp was 0.62 dollars, cost of second stamp was 0.62 dollars.

The cost of third stamp was

= 3(x+x)

=3(0.62 +0.62)

=3(1.24)

=3.72
