When do you use a conjugate? (math)

You use a conjugate to rationalize a denominator with a square root in it.

For example, take
(1)/(5-√(3))

To rationalize, you need to multiply by
(5+√(3) )/(5+√(3))

That would get you
(5+√(3))/(22)
