The hyphae that lie on the surface is called stolon. other anchor mycelium to the substrate and are called rhizoids. Some hyphae grow vertically and form reproductive structures called sporangi. In bread moulds, the tips of the rhizoids produce enzymes that digest organic materials in the substrate into soluble substances that are absorbed into the cytoplasm.
