average wind speed=40mph

let y=average air speed of the plane

let a=average wind speed

(y-a)=speed of plane, Chicago to Sacramento

(y+a)=speed of plane, Sacramento to Chicago

distance=travel timeƗspeed

4.5 (y-a)=1800

3.75 (y+a)=1800

4.5y-4.5a=1800

3.75y+3.75a=1800

16.875y-16.875a=6750

16.875y+16.875a=8100

then add it

33.75y=14850

y=440

4.5a=4.5y-1800

4.5a=180

a=40

average air speed plane =180mph
