3(x + 1) = 5x + 6.....distribute the 3 thru the parenthesis

3x + 3 = 5x + 6....subtract 3x from both sides

3 = 5x - 3x + 6...subtract 6 from both sides

3 - 6 = 5x - 3x....combine like terms

-3 = 2x...divide both sides by 2

-3/2 = x

check...

3(-3/2 + 1) = 5(-3/2) + 6

3(-3/2 + 2/2) = -15/2 + 6

3(-1/2) = -15/2 + 12/2

-3/2 = -3/2 (correct)...so it checks out

x = -3/2
