NO SAMPLE ANWSERS ONLY IN YOUR WORDS

A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison by implying that two different things have something in common. Note one example of a metaphor in the poem. Then, in one to two sentences, explain what two things are being compared.

Answer:

Metaphors mostly have the word was, is and were in it.

Here are some examples of metaphors.

"Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light."

They are comparing how the sun brings light or how it is very bright to how peoples hearts can be very bright or brings light.

"But Flynn preceded Casey, and so likewise did Blake,

But the former was a pudding, and the latter was a fake."

They are comparing how Flynn is like the pudding, Pudding is soft and weak, and he thinks Flynn is soft and weak and can't hit the ball very hard.

One example of a metaphor in the poem is "And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go, And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow." Here we can see that the speaker is comparing the force of Casey's blow to air "shattering," which tells us that Casey hit the ball very, very hard, which made it go very fast in the air. The metaphor the speaker used gives us a sense of imagery of how fast the ball was going.
