A) 1246 applications were received from boys who lived in other state

B) The university received 8900 applications in all

Solution:

Given that Last year a state university received 3,560 applications from boys

Of those applications, 35% were from boys who lived in other states

Total applications received = 3560

A. How many applications did the university receive from boys who lived in other states?

Out of 3560 applications, 35% were from boys who lived in other states

Therefore, number of applications received from boys who lived in other state is given as:

\rightarrow 35 \% \text{ of } 3560\\\\\rightarrow 35 \% * 3560\\\\\rightarrow (35)/(100) * 3560\\\\\rightarrow 0.35 * 3560 = 1246

Thus 1246 applications were received from boys who lived in other state

B. Applications to the university from boys represented 40% of all applications. How many applications did the university receive in all?

Let "x" be the number of all applications received

40 % of all applications = applications from boys

40 % of x = 3560

(40)/(100) * x = 3560\\\\0.4 * x = 3560\\\\0.4x = 3560\\\\x = (3560)/(0.4)\\\\x = 8900

Thus the university received 8900 applications in all
