Question:

Bruce bought two books one Book cost four more than three times the other, together the two books cost him 72

. find prices for the two books

Answer:

The price of books are $ 17 and $ 55

Solution:

Let "x" be the cost of one book

Given that one Book cost four more than three times the other

Then, other book cost = 4 + 3x

Also given that together the two books cost 72

cost of one book + cost of other book = 72

x + 4 + 3x = 72

The above equation is used to solve the problem

x + 4 + 3x = 72

4x + 4 = 72

4x = 72 - 4

4x = 68

x = 17

Thus cost of one book is $ 17

Then cost of other book is 4 + 3x = 4 + 3(17) = 4 + 51 = 55

The other book costs $ 55
