If you're talking the equation
(5x-2)/(3) =6, then:

(5x-2)/(3) =6

  • multiply
    3 onto both sides.

5x-2=18

  • add
    2 to both sides.

5x=20

  • divide both sides by 5

x=4

If you're talking about the equation
5x-(2)/(3) =6, then:

5x-(2)/(3) =6

  • add
    (2)/(3) to each side

5x = 6+(2)/(3)

  • divide both sides by
    5.

x=(6)/(5) +(2)/(15)

  • find the common denominator of
    (6)/(5) and
    (2)/(15). In this case its
    15, so multiply both the numerator and denominator of
    (6)/(5) by
    3.

x=(18)/(15) +(2)/(15)

  • Now that there is a common denominator, add the two terms together.

x=(20)/(15) = (4)/(3) = 1(1)/(3)
