EXPERIMENT: GROWING ROOTS

You have learned that plants naturally produce chemicals that help them grow. These chemicals are present in all parts of a plant. What do you think will happen if you take a stem cutting from a plant and place it in water? In this experiment you will answer this question.

Here is your goal for this assignment:

Observe the growth of a plant from a cutting


These materials are needed:

water
stem cutting of growing plants
tall baby-food jar

Procedure:

Note: This investigation will take about two weeks. While you are waiting, proceed to the next assignment in this unit. Remember to record your data every other day or so until you have finished.

1. Fill a baby-food jar one-fourth full of water.

2. Fresh-cut a stem, such as a piece of a rosebush.

3. Place the stem in the water.

4. Be sure the water level stays about the same, while you do this assignment.

5. Record your observations using a printout of the chart provided in this assignment.

Your essay should answer the following questions: (Be sure to write complete sentences.)

What happened to the stem?
Did it grow roots?
What does this mean about your stem's ability to make growth chemicals?
What substance could you have used to make the roots grow sooner?
If someone gave you a stem of a special kind of holly, how would you get it to root?

The stem ends up dead all together because the root feel
