According to this excerpt, Buddhism first spread by monks, individuals or groups of monks, who travelled by land or sea. Buddhist missions were conducted in the company of traders most often, and royal emissaries as well . It was not an organized movement, but a voluntary action of indviduals who wanted to spread happiness, welfare and peace. One of the first missions by buddhists was a trip to Sri Lanka, an island in the Indian ocean (South Asia).
