Advantages and disadvantages of having classification system of mental disorders:

Advantages:

• Once the disorder is classified, treating the patient becomes easier.
• The extent or the intensity of the disorder can be determined from what class the disorder belongs to.
• Different levels of expertise can be appointed to treat the patient depending on the class of the disorder.

Disadvantages:

• Eventually, one or the other class of disorder would be started looking at as a more serious disorder.
• The approach towards different classes of disorders would be different.
• Standardised predetermined treatments designed based on the class of disorder would sometimes not work on some patients.
