Answer: Choice A) Median is about 3

Step-by-step explanation:

We can use a process of elimination to rule out the non-answers.

  • Choice B is false because the minimum is 0 hours, as indicated by the tip of the left whisker. So there are students who spent less than 1.875 hours doing math.
  • Choice C is false because we don't have enough info to determine the mean. This is true of any boxplot. We would need the list of data values to be able to compute the mean. The boxplot can only tell us the five number summary which is: min, Q1, median, Q3, max.
  • Choice D is false for similar reasoning discussed when eliminating choice B. The whiskers indicate that students spent less than 1.875 hours and more than 3.75 hours. The tip of the right whisker is cut off, so it's not clear where it ends. Luckily we don't need this info to eliminate choice D.

All that's left is choice A. The median is the vertical line in the box. It's not always at the visual center. We don't have enough info to see what the median is based on just the boxplot alone. There aren't enough numbers along the horizontal scale. But a good guess of the median is some value between Q1 = 1.875 and Q3 = 3.75 so why not 3.
