Penelope made note of all the bicycles and cars she could see parked or locked on a certain city block. All the cars had exactly four wheels, and all the bicycles had exactly two wheels. How many wheels were on the block if there were 7 bicycles and 15 cars? How many wheels were on the block if there were x bicycles and y cars? Total wheels, 7 bicycles and 15 cars: Total wheels, x bicycles and y cars:

Answer:

1 Block = 75 Wheels, and

1 Block = 2x + 4y

Explanation:

Let C and B stand for Cars and Bicycles. W is for wheels.

We know that:

1C = 4W, and

1B = 2W

How many wheels were on the block if there were 7 bicycles and 15 cars?

1 Block = 7B + 15C

1 Block = 7(2W) + 15(4W)

1 Block = 14W + 60W

1 Block = 75 Wheels

How many wheels were on the block if there were x bicycles and y cars?

1 Block = 2x + 4y
