This is a nice pythagorean theorem practice question.

The pythagorean theorem is (not my definition): the sum of the squares on the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square on the hypotenuse

or otherwise known as: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Taking a visual approach, if Sonia walks south 45 meters, the first leg will be 45 meters. Then she takes a left 28 meters, which is the second leg. Now you find the squares of those numbers and add them

45^2, or 45*45 is 2025

28^2, or 28*28 is 784

Now you add 2025 and 784 and find the square root.

2025+784 is 2809. Square root of 2809 is 53.
