In the Histories of Herodotus, the Greek historian, Harpagus was the general in the army of the Median king, Astyages.

King Astyages has a dream that his daughter, Mandane’s child would become the king of Media after overthrowing him. When a son is born to Mandane and Cambyses I, Astyages orders Harpagus to kill the child. Not wanting to kill the royal child, he gives the child to a shepherd, who brings him up as his son.
