The diagram shows a square pizza box with side lengths of 12 inches. In the box is a circular pizza with a radius of 5 inches. What is the difference between the area of box and the pizza?

Use π = 3.14 and round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Explanation:

the area of the box (as a square) is

side length × side length = side length ²

that is here 12² = 144 in²

the area of a circle is

pi×r²

that is here

pi×5² = pi×25 = 3.14×25 = 78.50 in²

the difference is

144 - 78.5 = 65.50 in²
