The first settlement was in Jamestown Virginia around 1607 , The surrounding area was rocky with till lands meaning most of the crops planted often failed because the roots were'nt able to spread. The soil was very fertile but needed heavy plowing first before it would be plantation ready. The first/dependant crops that the settlers planted consisted of beans, squash, peas, okra, pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, and peanuts. Maize (corn), and later rice and potatoes were grown in place of wheat and barley because of consistant flood lands.
