Well to help a little, they SHOULD be used to insert explanations, corrections, clarifications, or comments into quoted material. Brackets are always used in pairs; you must have both an opening and a closing bracket.

If the original material includes a noun or pronoun that is unclear, brackets can be used for clarification. In many cases, brackets can be avoided by reframing the quotation.
