Explanation:

I think what you meant was

an = -4(3^n) - 1

so, this is not meant to be a^n ...

and so when looking for the 5th term it just means n = 5.

a5 = -4×3⁵ - 1 = -4×243 -1 = -972 - 1 = -973

so, B is correct.
