Explanation:

Let x = unknown number

The sum of a number and negative 3

Sum = addition

We are adding the unknown number "x" and -3

So we have x + (-3) or just x - 3

The sum of that is multiplied by the unknown number

So we get ( x - 3 ) x

We can then simplify this expression to get x² - 3x
