the savings on the sweater is 140-87.50, or 52.50

you could create a proportion based on the statement:

52.50 is what percent of 140?

is/of = 'x'/100

52.5/140 = x/100

cross-multiply to get:

140x = 5250

x = 5250/140

x = 37.5
